Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue highlighted Oklahoma City’s defensive dominance following Thursday’s 122-101 defeat. “They can guard in all five positions. No weak links on the floor… they pressure you, speed you up, attack the dribble, and turn you over,” Lue said.
Lue pinpointed turnovers as the decisive factor. “We give up 29 turnovers for 38 points. I thought our half-court defense was really good… but when you turn the ball over against them, it’s just too hard to recover,” he explained.
The Clippers showed early promise, according to Lue, but Oklahoma City’s bench unit, led by Alex Caruso, applied relentless pressure. “They really turned the defense up off the bench and we weren’t able to handle it,” he noted.
Lue praised Bogdan Bogdanovic for his contributions in the starting lineup. “Another ball handler, can make a shot, run pick and roll, get guys shots… his movement and ability to run pick and roll was good for us,” he said.
John Collins also drew Lue’s attention for his energy and effort. “I thought he was good… his energy was really good, and we had some opportunities we missed,” Lue said, while noting that Ivica Zubac faced mismatches against smaller defenders that were not fully exploited.
The Clippers struggled without James Harden, who missed the game with a bruised left calf. Lue emphasized the team’s need to manage possessions against elite defenses. “Coming to the game we talked about not turning the basketball over… the way they pressure you makes it hard to execute,” he said.
Despite the 21-point loss, Lue found value in the team’s focus and competitiveness at the start. “I thought the way we started was good… with the right intent. But their pressure, especially from their bench, was too much for us to handle,” he explained.
Oklahoma City improved to 25-2, led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s 32 points and Chet Holmgren’s 22, while the Clippers fell to 6-21. Los Angeles shot 49% overall but struggled from three-point range, connecting on just 10 of 32 attempts.
The Clippers will look to rebound Saturday when they host the Lakers, while the Thunder travel to Minnesota aiming to extend their perfect 13-0 home record.
