Jonathan Kuminga is expected to reenter the Warriors’ rotation when Golden State returns to action Thursday in Phoenix, following a three-day break. Head coach Steve Kerr indicated that Kuminga’s recent effort in practice has earned him another opportunity.

“You definitely want to see how guys respond in practice,” Kerr said. “And I can tell you, JK, has been great this last week as he’s been out of the rotation. He’s working really hard, and I’m going to reward that.”

Kuminga’s season has been uneven. After a strong start as a starter that prompted Kerr to publicly back him, his production dipped, leading to a move back to the bench. He then missed seven games with knee issues before returning in late November.

Although he earned another start on December 6 in Cleveland, he struggled mightily in that game, shooting 1-of-10, and has since received DNP-CDs in Golden State’s last three contests.

Kerr has said he plans to keep his current starting lineup intact for now, meaning Kuminga is expected to come off the bench. His role remains worth monitoring, especially with the trade deadline approaching.

The former No. 7 overall pick becomes eligible to be traded on January 15 and is viewed as a notable potential trade candidate.

In 17 games this season, Kuminga is averaging 12.4 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.6 assists in 25.6 minutes per game.
