Cooper Flagg made NBA history Monday night, scoring 42 points in the Mavericks’ 140-133 overtime loss to Utah to become the highest-scoring 18-year-old the league has ever seen.

The No. 1 overall pick surpassed LeBron James’ previous record of 37 points, set in 2003, while tying the franchise rookie scoring mark held by Mark Aguirre.

Flagg did most of his damage in regulation, scoring 40 points before overtime and playing a key role in forcing the extra period by drawing a foul late and intentionally missing a free throw to extend the game.

He finished with seven rebounds, six assists and two blocks, shooting efficiently from the floor and the line.

Despite the milestone, Flagg focused on the loss.

“It’s tough,” he said. “I want to look at it [in] wins and losses. Obviously we didn’t win.”

Coach Jason Kidd praised his growth, noting that Flagg continues to improve as he gains experience.

With his 19th birthday approaching, the rookie’s historic night served as another sign of what could be ahead.
