Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla discussed key takeaways following Monday’s 112-105 loss to the Detroit Pistons at TD Garden. “Second game in a row where second half was a bit of a problem,” Mazzulla noted, while emphasizing that his team executed well but missed open shots.
He credited Detroit for making timely plays in the fourth quarter. “They made some big-time shots… it was a combination of both,” Mazzulla said, reflecting on self-inflicted errors and the Pistons’ defensive pressure.
Mazzulla addressed his team’s turnovers, saying, “We had 13 turnovers… that’s just normal. There were a couple when we drove off our foot… normal stuff that happens throughout a game.”
He highlighted Jaylen Brown’s decision-making in crunch time. “He got to the free throw line, finished at the rim, kicked out for open shots… that’s just the nature of it. More important is making the right read,” Mazzulla explained.
Depth issues were also discussed, particularly the absence of Sam Hauser and fouling concerns for Jordan Walsh and Hugo Gonzalez. “The next guy’s got to play… we had some good moments and obviously moments we can get better at,” he said.
Mazzulla addressed Boston’s extensive use of zone defense. “I thought it messed up their rhythm… it allowed us to change matchups, keep guys out of it,” he said, acknowledging that Javonte Green and Cade Cunningham made key shots despite the defensive adjustment.
Physicality was another focus, with Mazzulla noting the playoff-like intensity of the contest. “Games like this call for another level of physicality… tonight had a playoff-type feel, and we met that challenge most of the game,” he said.
Bench scoring differences drew particular attention, with Detroit outscoring Boston 47-14. “You have to make them in order for the bench points to count… we got some really good looks, just didn’t make some of them,” Mazzulla explained.
The coach also addressed lineup decisions late in the game. “I thought we were down multiple possessions… I liked what Ant gave us offensively and defensively… looking to just score and have an offensive lineup out there,” he said regarding Ant Simons’ rotation time.
Mazzulla concluded by noting the Celtics’ need to maintain execution and focus. “We got what we can learn from this… maintain mental toughness, physical toughness, and get our execution right on both ends,” he said.
Boston will look to rebound Friday night at home against the Miami Heat, while Detroit continues its road trip Thursday in Dallas.
