Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra spoke candidly after Monday’s 106-96 loss to the Toronto Raptors at Kaseya Center, noting the tightness of the contest. “We pushed to a five-point lead 10 times during the course of the game, and we just could not… get it to a double-digit lead from there,” Spoelstra said.

He highlighted Toronto’s execution in key moments, particularly in the fourth quarter. “They won the moments there… they made more plays in the moments of truth than we did,” Spoelstra explained.

Spoelstra acknowledged the overall competitiveness of the game but stressed the Raptors capitalized in critical stretches. “It was two teams competing… but they made more plays in those moments,” he added.

The Heat’s defense kept Toronto under 110 points for most of the night, but the Raptors surged in the final quarter with a 17-2 run. Spoelstra noted, “Seasons get like this and you just have to stay together and get back to work.”

The coach addressed Nikola Jovic’s alarming first-quarter fall, which left the forward with a bleeding elbow. “Obviously a scary situation there… hopefully we dodged a bullet,” Spoelstra said. He confirmed scans came back negative, though the injury will remain sore.

Miami’s absence of Tyler Herro also factored into the loss. Spoelstra explained, “He and the trainers met… he just didn’t feel right. We’ll re-evaluate him tomorrow and see the next step.”

The Heat struggled to generate transition opportunities against Toronto’s defense. “Teams are more aware… we can still get more opportunities,” Spoelstra noted, citing Raptors’ deflections and defensive pressure.

He also reflected on the team’s paint presence, acknowledging Toronto’s strong interior defense. “They were swarming the paint… forced you to make quick decisions,” he said. Spoelstra emphasized Miami needed cleaner execution on drives and better reads in those situations.

Despite the loss, Spoelstra remained focused on fundamentals and growth. “All you need is four or six more points that might come off your defense… that changes the whole deal,” he stated, pointing to areas for immediate improvement.

The Heat will look to regroup before Thursday’s road game against the Brooklyn Nets as they seek to stop their five-game skid.
