Grant Hill, managing director of USA Basketball, reflected on the pressures and lessons from Team USA’s gold medal run at the 2024 Paris Olympics during an interview with Adrian Wojnarowski on The Program with Woj. Hill emphasized that no one could fully prepare him for the weight of guiding a national team. “There’s only a handful of people who I think understand what that pressure is…maybe Jerry Colangelo, maybe Coach K,” he said, noting the unique challenges of the Olympic stage.
Hill highlighted the importance of connecting with today’s NBA players and recognizing generational differences. “I might have gone into it sort of looking at players and relationships and those dynamics through the lens of maybe when I retired in 2013…every generation is going to be different. And I know that I’ll be better in terms of communicating with them as we move forward,” he said.
Balancing player experience and enjoyment was central to Hill’s approach. “We wanted it to be amongst all the pressure and expectations, we want it to be an enjoyable experience for players and their families,” he said. Hill emphasized that understanding players’ needs and building trust is critical during the condensed international schedule.
On roster building, Hill reflected on the 2023 FIBA World Cup and the 2024 Olympics, highlighting the strategic differences. “We came close in 2023…offensively we were most efficient since 2004, defensively the least,” he said. He stressed that assembling a team to win gold requires more than stacking all-stars: “Every team has its own journey…we’ll be very thoughtful and intentional about building the roster for both 27 and 28.”
Hill praised Erik Spoelstra’s appointment as Team USA head coach, noting his ability to preserve culture while leading a new generation. “He understands culture, he understands a program…he’s a great basketball mind, a great thinker, a great ability to connect and really get the most out of players,” Hill said. Spoelstra’s leadership is expected to guide Team USA as veteran stars like LeBron James and Stephen Curry step away from international play.
Hill also discussed the challenges of communication in a highly scrutinized environment. “With USA Basketball, everything is compressed…you always want to support your coach, you want to also guide him…ultimately you hire your coach to coach,” he said. He added, “I’m a big believer in relationships…and taking the time to really develop those and then leveraging that…there’s a trust that’s been developed where you can be honest with each other.”
Looking ahead, Hill emphasized adaptation and legacy. “We want to honor the legacy of the program and those who’ve been a part of it. We also want to continue to move forward and we have to be able to adapt to the times,” he said. Citing Coach K, Hill added, “Every four or five years he would just press the refresh button…what are we seeing out there? What are some of the best practices? How do they live? How can we adapt and adjust to them?”
