Desmond Bane described the Orlando Magic’s resilience after overcoming a 15-point early deficit to defeat the Miami Heat 117-108 in the NBA Cup quarterfinal on Tuesday at Kia Center.

Bane emphasized the team’s mindset, saying, “I just thought our spirit was in the right spot… we had to get back to our identity. Smashmouth basketball on both sides of the floor.” He credited collective effort for the turnaround, highlighting the contributions of teammates like Paolo Banchero and the returning bench.

Bane matched his season-high with 37 points, including six 3-pointers, setting the tone in the fourth quarter with two triples and a three-point play to stretch Orlando’s lead to 96-83. He noted the balance between scoring and facilitating, praising Banchero as “a very willing passer” who draws defensive attention and creates opportunities for others.

Reflecting on Franz Wagner’s recent high ankle sprain, Bane expressed relief that the injury was not season-ending and emphasized the “next man up” mentality that allowed the team to maintain focus and perform collectively.

The Magic shot 46.9% from three and 51% overall, with Wendell Carter Jr. contributing 14 points and 10 rebounds while Anthony Black added 10 points and seven assists. Orlando’s bench outscored Miami’s 31-18 and helped the team control the glass 47-39.

Bane highlighted the significance of the NBA Cup format, calling it “a great opportunity for us to play some meaningful basketball early in the season” while also joking about the financial stakes for advancing. He emphasized that maintaining an aggressive mindset, regardless of who is on the floor, is key to his role and the team’s success.

When asked about on-court competitiveness with Miami, Bane downplayed a brief exchange with Tyler Herro, saying it faded as the game progressed, reflecting the team’s focus on execution rather than distractions.

Bane also detailed his focus on attacking the rim and finishing through contact, noting a conscious effort to regain aggressiveness in the paint. He described working with teammate Tay Carter in practice to refine this aspect of his game.

Orlando advances to face the New York Knicks in the NBA Cup semifinals on Saturday in Las Vegas, seeking their first championship appearance in the tournament’s history. Bane and the Magic enter the matchup with confidence after a balanced, resilient performance that showcased scoring depth and defensive effort.
