Isaiah Stewart has grown into a major defensive force off the Pistons’ bench, and both his coach and teammates are publicly emphasizing how valuable he has become.
Coach J.B. Bickerstaff praised him strongly, telling Omari Sankofa II of The Detroit Free Press, “He’s the best defensive center in the league and it’s not close. And I think it’s time that everybody who watches basketball recognizes it.”
Cade Cunningham took that praise even further, saying in Sankofa’s video, “I think he’s the best defensive player in the league. I would love to see him get a Defensive Player of the Year award, ’cause I think he deserves it. I see the best defenders in the league all the time, and I’m thankful I don’t have to see Stew.”
Stewart’s numbers support their enthusiasm: he’s averaging 2.0 blocks in only 22.5 minutes per game, with five games of four or more blocks.
Ausar Thompson also praised Stewart’s relentless effort, saying, “There will never be a shot that goes up that Stew doesn’t contest. He puts his body on the line every night. It’s beautiful to watch.”
However, award eligibility could be an issue due to league-minute requirements. Stewart has already missed three games and logged fewer than 20 minutes in six others, which may complicate his chances despite the strong backing from within the organization.
