Houston Rockets head coach Ime Udoka addressed the team’s 122-109 loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday, citing turnovers and poor interior defense as key factors. “We had 34 points off our turnovers and that spree of about five live-ball turnovers really blew it open,” Udoka said.
Udoka explained that Houston’s inability to protect the ball compounded problems against a Mavericks team playing at a faster pace. “It wasn’t like they were trying to make plays a lot. We were just driving into a little bit into the crowd and missing some outlets,” he noted.
The Rockets also struggled inside, allowing Dallas to score over 70 points in the paint. Udoka added, “Breakdowns off the dribble, Williams and certain guys beating us repeatedly… our one-on-one defense was poor, and turnovers didn’t help that.”
Key players underperformed, according to Udoka, who mentioned that aside from Jabari Smith Jr., Kevin Durant, and Aaron Holiday, “It was a no-show for a lot of guys.” The absence of Alperen Sengun and other contributors affected Houston’s depth and interior presence.
Durant scored 20 of his 27 points in the first half but did not play in the fourth quarter as Dallas surged, outscoring Houston 37-20 in the third. Anthony Davis led the Mavericks with 29 points on 14-of-19 shooting, while P.J. Washington contributed 14 points, seven rebounds, and five steals.
Udoka acknowledged that injuries and missing players changed the Rockets’ style. “Some of the depth isn’t there…we didn’t impose our will as far as our physicality,” he said, emphasizing the challenge of playing without key big men.
The Rockets committed 11 turnovers in the first half alone, resulting in 16 points for Dallas, and continued to struggle with live-ball turnovers in the third quarter. Udoka said, “Trying to come out and do a better job, we did worse. That’s where the game got away from us.”
Despite the loss, Udoka focused on learning from the matchup. He noted the Mavericks’ faster pace compared to previous Dallas teams he has faced, adding, “They just played at a faster pace and especially when we turn it over, it compounds.”
Houston looks to rebound against the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday, while the Mavericks aim to carry their momentum into a matchup with the Brooklyn Nets. Udoka stressed the need for ball security and stronger defensive efforts as the team prepares for the next challenge.
