Sacramento Kings head coach Doug Christie acknowledged the challenges his team faced in Friday’s 128-119 loss to the Utah Jazz, pointing to matchup difficulties and critical scoring runs.
“There’s a 17-0 run right there that pretty much seals the deal,” Christie said, stressing the need for better execution in closing quarters.
Despite the loss, Christie highlighted standout performances from his roster. Zach LaVine led with 34 points, connecting on six free throws and four three-pointers, while Keegan Murray added 23 points and nine rebounds, impressing with his defensive contributions and ability to drive to the basket.
Christie praised LaVine’s all-around game, noting his impact beyond scoring. “There are other ways to affect the game… defensively getting after people, coming back, rebounding the basketball,” he said, emphasizing the veteran’s versatility.
The Kings struggled to contain Utah’s third-quarter surge, which gave the Jazz a decisive lead. Lauri Markkanen scored 28 points and fueled a 20-2 run that set up Utah’s advantage heading into the fourth. Keyonte George also contributed 31 points, including consecutive threes that regained double-digit separation after Sacramento briefly closed the gap.
Christie also recognized Maxime Raynaud’s progress, citing the young forward’s poise and floor communication. “Even when he makes mistakes, there’s not a panic in him… a really good outing tonight,” Christie said, highlighting the potential for further development.
Sacramento’s veteran point guard Russell Westbrook recorded his 206th career triple-double with 16 points, 14 assists, and 12 rebounds, but the Kings went winless in four NBA Cup group games. Christie underscored the importance of continued effort and lineup adjustments. “There’s more to give out there for sure,” he said, signaling ongoing work on rotations and matchups.
The Kings shot 45% from the field and 34% from three-point range, while the Jazz converted 48% of their shots and 78% from the free-throw line. Utah also capitalized on key runs, holding Sacramento without a field goal for six minutes in the second quarter.
Looking ahead, Sacramento returns home to face the Memphis Grizzlies, while Utah hosts Houston on Sunday, aiming to build on its first NBA Cup group-stage win and snap a four-game losing streak.
