LeBron James highlighted the importance of execution and team balance after the Los Angeles Lakers’ 129-119 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Friday at Crypto.com Arena. Austin Reaves scored 38 points, and Luka Doncic added 35 points with 11 assists, extending the Lakers’ winning streak to six games.
James emphasized the focus on winning the games in front of them. “We play the games that’s in front of us, and more than anything, we’re just happy to continue to win ball games and win them the way the game plan is supposed to be executed,” he said.
The Lakers star praised the team’s offensive spacing, particularly the 45-degree angle cuts and off-ball movement. “Those guys got so many eyes on them… it’s literally a numbers game for us,” James explained, referring to how Reaves and Doncic create opportunities for teammates.
James also highlighted Deandre Ayton’s role in the offense. “He does everything that we ask him to do… we have the responsibility to give him the ball when he’s open, and he’s making them all count,” James said. He added that Ayton’s pick-and-roll contributions and defensive communication are key in a league that emphasizes these plays.
Facing his former team, James acknowledged the emotional undertones of the game. “Going against your old teammates, your whole coaching staff… obviously, some of that emotion is always going to carry,” he said, noting the presence of Anthony Davis, D’Angelo Russell, and other familiar faces on the Mavericks.
James stressed the habits that have helped the Lakers sustain their success. “We have our game plan and we’re executing it… even when the game doesn’t go as planned, we just have to stay calm, understand the next possession is the most important,” he said.
The Lakers turned a narrow deficit into a double-digit lead with a late 13-1 run, fueled by Reaves, Doncic, and Deandre Ayton, who scored 17 points during the decisive stretch. Los Angeles shot 59% from the field and 51% from three-point range, while Dallas converted 48% of its shots overall.
Looking ahead, the Lakers will host New Orleans on Sunday, maintaining momentum as they enter the NBA Cup quarterfinals. James emphasized staying focused on execution and defensive stops to sustain their winning ways.
