Luka Doncic poured in 38 points as the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Charlotte Hornets 121–111 on Monday night at Spectrum Center. After the game, Doncic addressed his highlight-reel plays and shared insights on the team’s performance and dynamics.
When asked about a recent dunk and Austin Reaves’ comments, Doncic said, “I can dunk. I just don’t want to do it all the time. Just choose not to sometimes.” He added that Reaves was “a hater” but acknowledged the playful nature of their rivalry.
On the team’s defensive adjustments, Doncic highlighted the importance of physicality, noting, “In first quarter they hit eight threes, we just needed to be more physical. We were out the bodies all five players.” He credited the Lakers for sustaining that approach throughout the game.
Discussing the team’s performance despite missing key players, Doncic expressed optimism: “It’s always great to start good. We were short-handed. I missed games, Bron hasn’t even played. I think this team has a big potential.”
Doncic also praised the contributions of Rui Hachimura, describing him as “very underrated” and saying, “Outside of that maybe Atlanta game, he deserves a lot of credit in our wins. He’s been amazing for us and the way he plays every game helps a lot.”
He spoke on Reaves’ return from injury, stating, “I was pushing him to get back. I needed him back. He’s an amazing player, and it’s great to have him back.”
Doncic also highlighted Marcus Smart’s leadership and impact, calling his seven steals “insane” and emphasizing how Smart’s presence influences both ends of the court.
Reflecting on the team’s bounce-back from a disappointing performance in Atlanta, Doncic said, “We forgot about that game. That’s not who we are. Except the first quarter, we showed that today.” He credited the additional ball-handlers and playmakers for helping him manage the offense more effectively.
On personal moments of gratitude, Doncic added, “Every time I’m on the court, I just forget about everything, do what I enjoy doing. Being out there playing basketball—it’s my job, which is the best job in the world. So, I’m grateful for that.”
The Lakers now improve to 8-3 and continue their road trip in Oklahoma City on Wednesday, while Charlotte falls to 3-7 as it searches for consistency without LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller.
