Charlotte fell to 3–7 despite a 34-point night from Miles Bridges, who knocked down seven 3-pointers.
Rookie Kon Knueppel nearly posted his first career triple-double, closing with 19 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists in 38 minutes.
With LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller still sidelined, the Hornets relied heavily on Bridges and Knueppel to generate offense.
The Lakers and Hornets traded baskets early before Los Angeles adjusted its spacing and defensive pressure in the second half.
Hachimura punished Charlotte’s aggressive blitzes on Doncic, hitting three 3-pointers during the third-quarter run that broke open the game.
Doncic controlled the pace all night, shooting 14-of-28 and adding six rebounds, seven assists and five made threes.
He energized the road crowd with a two-handed dunk in traffic and later flicked in a three-quarter-court shot that dropped after a timeout whistle, drawing a loud reaction from Lakers fans in attendance.
Charlotte surged late, trimming the deficit to eight with just over four minutes remaining as Bridges continued to score and Knueppel pushed the tempo.
Doncic responded with a strong drive down the right side of the lane, absorbing contact for a three-point play that steadied Los Angeles.
Smart’s late 3-pointer sealed the outcome as the Lakers executed in half-court sets and limited Charlotte to one shot per possession.
Bridges opened the game on a tear, scoring 16 points in the first quarter with four threes, but the Hornets struggled to sustain their early rhythm once the Lakers tightened their perimeter coverage.
Charlotte shot 52.1 percent from the field and 47.2 percent from deep but committed 22 turnovers, many coming during Los Angeles’ third-quarter push.
The Lakers finished at 50 percent shooting with 14 made threes and a 17-of-20 mark at the line.
Ayton added 14 points and six rebounds, Smart contributed 13 points and seven steals, and Reaves’ ability to shift between on-ball creation and off-ball spacing helped balance the offense whenever Charlotte overloaded toward Doncic.
The Hornets will host Milwaukee on Wednesday as they search for consistency without their top scorers.
Los Angeles continues its road stretch Wednesday in Oklahoma City.
