San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama is on track for a historic contract extension if he secures the NBA MVP award this season. According to Yossi Gozlan of Third Apron, the Spurs’ star would qualify for a maximum extension worth up to 25% of the salary cap, with escalators pushing it toward the higher 30% limit if he wins MVP.

The Spurs’ 21-year-old center is currently in the third year of his four-year, $55.2 million rookie scale deal. He has posted dominant numbers early this season, averaging 31.0 points, 13.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 2.8 blocks over four games.

Wembanyama’s contract eligibility includes specific performance-based criteria. While awards like Defensive Player of the Year and All-NBA selections can qualify a player for higher maximum salaries, only an MVP award in his third season allows him to reach the 30% cap ceiling immediately. Otherwise, he must wait until at least the 2026-27 season and secure a major accolade to access the top tier.

San Antonio’s cap outlook for 2026–27 leaves room for Wembanyama’s extension. The team projects total cap allocations of $216.3 million against a $166 million salary cap, with active roster commitments totaling $82.1 million. After accounting for cap holds and options, practical space stands at $83.8 million, making the potential Wembanyama extension financially feasible.

Other Spurs players like Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson, and Stephon Castle have extensions or club options pending, but Wembanyama’s contract represents the most significant move for the franchise. His ability to secure a historic deal depends entirely on his 2025–26 performance and MVP candidacy.
