Indiana Pacers rookie Kam Jones publicly addressed his arrest for alleged erratic driving on Monday, expressing deep remorse toward both the organization and the fan base.
As reported by Dustin Dopirak of the Indy Star, the player took full responsibility for the incident and emphasized that he had learned from the experience.
“I’m deeply sorry to the Pacers organization and the fans,” Jones said. “This was a very, very traumatic experience for me. I’ve never been through anything like this, but definitely a mistake that I’ve learned from. … It won’t happen again. I’m deeply sorry to the organization and I’m looking forward to letting this one go past and get back to work.”
According to police reports, Jones explained that he was rushing because he believed he was late for practice.
The Indy Star clarified, however, that the Pacers didn’t hold an official practice that day – Jones had been heading to the team’s facility for treatment and rehabilitation related to a back injury that had kept him out of preseason action.
Head coach Rick Carlisle stood by the 23-year-old guard, praising his accountability and professionalism despite the incident.
“My feeling is that this is going to turn out to be a speeding ticket and probably not much more,” Carlisle told reporters. “The kid thought he was going to be late to practice so he was going too fast. I’m not going to get into much more about it than that.”
Carlisle also stressed that Jones was the one who insisted on making a public apology, calling his character “exemplary” and noting that the rookie’s immediate reaction was to make things right with his teammates and the organization.
