Tom Thibodeau reportedly felt a deep sense of betrayal after being dismissed as head coach of the New York Knicks, sources told The Athletic’s Ian O’Connor.
Thibodeau, who guided the Knicks to their first Eastern Conference Finals appearance in 25 years, was informed of the decision despite leading New York to an 18-10 postseason run in 2025 and eliminating the defending champion Boston Celtics in the Semi-Finals.
A source close to the coach said the former Chicago and Minnesota bench boss was hurt by the perceived lack of support from staff and players he had helped. “When you find out that people you helped either weren’t with you in the end or didn’t fight for you like you fought for them, that stings,” the source explained.
The Knicks’ front office, including team president Leon Rose, maintained that the decision came with full support from ownership. Thibodeau reportedly found himself philosophically misaligned with several front office members who emphasized his flaws over his strengths.
Thibodeau, 67, joined the Knicks on July 30, 2020, and immediately helped transform a struggling franchise. In his first season, he led New York to a playoff berth for the first time since 2012–13, earning his second NBA Coach of the Year award.
During his tenure, the Knicks compiled a 51-31 record in the 2024–25 season, marking their strongest regular-season performance under Thibodeau and the second-best in the Eastern Conference. Despite this, management decided to part ways in June 2025.
Over his NBA coaching career, Thibodeau has built a reputation for defensive-minded teams and developing young talent. His cumulative record includes 578 wins over 998 regular-season games and 48 playoff victories across stints in Chicago, Minnesota, and New York.
Though the Knicks move signals a new direction for the franchise, Thibodeau’s impact on New York basketball remains evident. Players such as Jalen Brunson and Julius Randle flourished under his guidance, highlighting the long-term effect of his coaching philosophy.
