Memphis Grizzlies star guard Ja Morant, who missed the entire preseason with a left ankle sprain, is expected to play in Wednesday’s season opener against the visiting New Orleans Pelicans, according to NBA insider Marc Stein.

Morant, 26, suffered the injury during a practice on October 6 and was initially listed as week-to-week, forcing him to sit out all five preseason games. His return for the opener marks a key boost for Memphis’ backcourt after an injury-plagued 2024–25 season.

Last year, Morant averaged 23.2 points, 7.3 assists, and 4.1 rebounds across 50 games while managing a surgically repaired right shoulder and a hip issue late in the season. Despite his limited availability, he remained a pivotal offensive force for the Grizzlies.

Durability has been a recurring concern in Morant’s career, as he has never played more than 67 games in a single season.

The Grizzlies open the season at FedExForum on October 22, followed by home games against Miami and Indiana.
