Houston Rockets head coach Ime Udoka emphasized the need for more corner three-pointers as part of the team’s offensive growth heading into the 2025–26 season. According to the Houston Chronicle, Udoka said Houston is focusing on spacing and shot selection around its key scorers — Kevin Durant, Alperen Sengun, and Amen Thompson.

Udoka clarified that while the Rockets are not aiming to depend solely on three-point shooting, improving efficiency and volume from deep remains a priority. “We don’t want to pass up shots and we encourage guys, since I’ve been here, to let it fly, especially off of Alpi,” Udoka said.

He added that both Durant and Thompson draw defensive attention when driving to the rim, creating open opportunities along the perimeter. The coaching staff wants shooters to capitalize on those kick-out chances, especially from the corners, which have historically been among the league’s most efficient zones.

“We definitely got to get more corner 3s up,” Udoka said. “It’s been an emphasis of ours to spread the court, hunt some of those in transition.”

With the addition of Durant, the Rockets’ offensive system now blends a mix of veteran scoring and emerging playmaking. Sengun’s passing from the post and Thompson’s driving ability have become focal points for generating rhythm looks beyond the arc.

Udoka’s comments suggest a clear effort to modernize the team’s shot distribution, aligning with the NBA’s trend toward pace-and-space offenses.

Durant’s arrival gives Houston a reliable mid-range scorer, but Udoka’s plan aims to balance that strength with spacing and volume shooting. The team expects Jabari Smith Jr., Josh Okogie, and rookie Reed Sheppard to take on greater roles as perimeter threats.
