Russ Westbrook remains unsigned as the 2025-26 NBA season approaches, sparking speculation about his next move. According to reporter Carmichael Dave, Westbrook may have received an offer from a Chinese team for roughly half a season, worth nearly four times what the Sacramento Kings could provide.
The nine-time All-Star, who underwent right-hand surgery on May 27 to repair multiple ligament tears, declined his $3.4 million player option on June 13, officially entering free agency.
His career includes stops with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards, Lakers, Clippers, and Denver Nuggets, compiling 22.5 points, 7.1 assists, and 6.7 rebounds per game over 1,237 regular-season contests.
Dave cited sources suggesting that Westbrook could use a potential Chinese stint to maximize earnings while remaining available to join an NBA playoff contender later in the season.
Sam Amick noted that prominent players such as Stephon Marbury and DeMarcus Cousins have previously pursued overseas contracts to supplement their careers.
Westbrook’s journey in recent seasons has been marked by transitions and diminished roles. After averaging 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, and 4.9 rebounds with Denver in 2024-25, he has yet to secure a guaranteed NBA contract for the upcoming season.
The potential move abroad represents a notable detour for a player who remains one of the league’s most recognizable figures. With the Chinese Basketball Association schedule allowing flexibility, Westbrook could theoretically compete internationally while keeping the door open for a return to the NBA playoffs.
