Victor Wembanyama is taking his time with preparation before his third season starts.
After being diagnosed with a right shoulder blood clot in February 2025, the San Antonio Spurs superstar spent his entire summer working out with big man legends who helped him prepare for his third-year stint.
The franchise would now expect to make the playoffs with Wemby’s development in terms of skills and health, which can lead to their recent roster revamp
Hakeem Olajuwon
The 7-foot-3 center had a chance to work out with NBA Legend Hakeem Olajuwon, per Wembanyama’s Instagram post.
Despite being 62 years old, he appreciated the advice that he could apply to his game, such as dominating down the paint and big man post works.
“He’s still got it, he’s 62. It was incredible because it felt natural, his advice, even though it was a lot, it felt like I was absorbing it every day, and it was just a few days,” Victor Wembanyama said during a practice interview.
Spurs fans might see Wembanyama with another skillset like Olajuwon’s “the dream shake,” which can be possible due to his size and wingspan.
“Man, super useful, and he still got it. It’s natural for him, and it looked like it was a pleasure for him to teach. I would want to go again for sure.”
Kevin Garnett
Aside from the Houston Rockets superstar, he also acquired a mentorship from another NBA champion, MVP, and Defensive Player of the Year.
Wembanyama also learned from Kevin Garnett regarding values and traits as a team leader, especially in making the playoffs.
“He’s got a very unique perspective on the relationship as a leader, relationship with teammates and opponents, even the refs,” Wembanyama said.
As a young rising star, he believes in the maturity inside the player that should learn how to channel emotions like Garnett.
“I think he’s really smart emotionally, he’s got this energy, but he knows how to channel it and use it for the best,” he added.
Many expectations were placed on the 21-year-old Frenchman as he developed significantly during the summer. He averaged 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 3.8 blocks in 46 games last season.
