Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga has opted for a two-year, $48.5 million deal instead of a three-year, $75 million offer.

The shorter contract provides Kuminga with greater flexibility, allowing him to renegotiate or explore market options sooner while giving the Warriors a team option on the second year.

“Part of the reason he said no to that [$75M deal]… he does not want to be traded mid-season,” Anthony Slater reported, via HoopsHype.

Kuminga’s decision comes after a breakout 2024-25 season, where he averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists, establishing himself as a key contributor for Golden State.

The 22-year-old has reportedly made major strides this offseason, recovering fully from an ankle injury and showing significant improvement in his scoring and overall game.

“They really think he… took a trampoline off that Minnesota series last year as a scorer… he’s coming in fresh, healthy off the ankle,” Slater said, emphasizing Kuminga’s current form.

Kuminga recently wrapped up his first Warriors preseason practice and switched his jersey number from 00 to 1, signaling a new chapter with the team.

Agent Aaron Turner negotiated the deal after Golden State increased their initial offer by $8 million over two years, ensuring Kuminga earns roughly $15 million more than the qualifying offer.

While the two-year agreement ends the restricted free agency saga, it also opens a potential trade window beginning in January, when the Warriors can explore sign-and-trade options.

During the offseason, both the Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns expressed interest in acquiring Kuminga, but neither franchise could finalize a trade due to cap constraints.
