Austin Reaves confirmed his commitment to the Los Angeles Lakers despite turning down a lucrative contract extension this summer.
Speaking to ESPN, the 27-year-old guard said, via HoopsHype, “I want to be here. I want to be a Laker for life.” He added that the decision to decline $90 million was a business choice, emphasizing his gratitude for the organization and fans.
Reaves has developed into a key two-way contributor since going undrafted in 2021. Last season, he averaged a career-high 20.2 points, 5.8 assists, and 4.5 rebounds while shooting 45.9 percent from the field and 37.7 percent from three-point range.
His playoff performances have been equally impressive, posting 16.7 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game across three postseason runs while logging nearly 37 minutes per contest.
Reportedly, Reaves is expected to decline his player option after the 2026–27 season, making him an unrestricted free agent with significant interest around the league.
The San Antonio Spurs and several other teams are monitoring his situation closely, viewing him as one of the most valuable perimeter playmakers potentially available next summer.
Reaves signed a four-year, $53.8 million contract in 2023, which now stands as one of the league’s most cost-effective deals relative to his production. Analysts project he could command $30 to $35 million annually on his next deal.
The Lakers face a challenging decision in retaining him, particularly with Luka Doncic and LeBron James on the roster. Balancing star salaries with team depth under the luxury tax will test the front office.
Despite potential market opportunities, Reaves’ comments make it clear he values loyalty and continuity. “I’ve always bet on myself—from high school to college—and this is no different,” he said.
Reaves’ versatility as a secondary ballhandler and floor spacer makes him a strong fit alongside Los Angeles’ stars, while his upward trajectory suggests he could assume a leading role on other teams.
