Philadelphia 76ers guard Kyle Lowry is preparing for a new role off the court, as the veteran point guard has signed on to become an analyst with Amazon Prime Video, the NBA’s newest broadcast partner.
Prime Video announced on Tuesday through its official Twitter account.
According to Tim Reynolds of The Associated Press, the company’s press release confirmed that Lowry has agreed to a multiyear contract.
His involvement will begin with “select appearances” during the upcoming season, with plans for him to take on “increased responsibilities in the future” as the platform builds out its NBA coverage.
For Lowry, the chance to join Prime Sports represents the start of a new professional chapter.
“I’m excited to start the next chapter of my basketball journey with the Prime Sports team,” Lowry said.
“The talent they’ve assembled is incredible, and together we’ll deliver something fresh and special for basketball fans worldwide. It’s an honor to be part of this from Day One, and I’m committed to sharing the insights I’ve gained from my career through NBA on Prime for years to come.”
The Philadelphia native has deep ties to the city, having played his college basketball at Villanova before being drafted 24th overall in 2006.
Now entering his 20th NBA season, Lowry is on the verge of joining an exclusive group: only 11 players before him, including fellow point guard Chris Paul last year, have managed to reach that milestone of longevity.
Reynolds notes that Lowry has long been admired by teammates and coaches alike, and that it “seemed inevitable” the 39-year-old would eventually make the jump to television, given his reputation as a thoughtful communicator and respected voice in the game.
A six-time All-Star and a central figure in the Toronto Raptors’ 2019 championship run, Lowry now finds himself in the later stages of his career.
He joined his hometown 76ers midway through the 2023/24 season and is entering his second full year with the team.
Last season, however, was a difficult one as injuries limited him to just 35 games, during which he posted career-low averages of 3.9 points, 2.7 assists, and 1.9 rebounds in 18.8 minutes per contest.
