Golden State Warriors and free agent Gary Payton II have reportedly discussed a two-year, $7.9 million deal for his return. The agreement remains contingent on the outcome of Jonathan Kuminga’s contract situation, sources told Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson.
Payton, 31, is a defensive stalwart for the Warriors, known for guarding multiple positions and providing energy off the bench. He played 62 games in the 2024–25 season, averaging 6.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 0.8 steals while shooting 57.4% from the field.
During the playoffs, he delivered one of his strongest performances on April 26, scoring a career-high 16 points in a first-round win over the Houston Rockets. That game helped Golden State take a 2–1 series lead, highlighting his impact in critical moments.
Originally acquired by the Warriors in 2020, Payton was a key rotation player during their 2022 championship run. He later returned to the team in a four-team deal in February 2023 and has remained a fan favorite within the organization.
The proposed return deal aligns with the Warriors’ efforts to maintain depth on the defensive end. Payton’s ability to guard opposing teams’ top scorers has made him a trusted component in Golden State’s lineup.
The deal also intersects with the team’s decision on Al Horford, whose potential signing could depend on how the Kuminga situation unfolds. The Warriors are weighing multiple roster moves this offseason to balance veteran experience with young talent.
Payton has career averages of 5.5 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.0 steal per game across 270 NBA contests. He has also maintained 55.7% shooting from the field and 34.0% from three-point range, making him an efficient contributor in limited minutes.
