Former NBA star Gilbert Arenas praised Kobe Bryant’s defensive impact, highlighting the Los Angeles Lakers legend’s ability to neutralize multiple scorers during his career.
Speaking on his podcast, Arenas responded to Jeff Teague’s past comments that questioned Bryant’s defensive reputation. Arenas emphasized that Bryant’s value went beyond isolated matchups.
“So, Jeff Teague, yeah, you might got the best of Kobe Bryant that night or the every night you played him. But he’s coming you to slow you down,” Arenas said on No Chill Gil, via HoopsHype. “We only have an experience from two times a year, right? So from what I’ve seen him do to the two guards on our team, yeah, he was like that. Yeah. He was shutting players down.”
Arenas recalled how Bryant often switched responsibilities depending on who was heating up offensively. He noted that Bryant could shift from defending Joe Johnson to himself or even to Antawn Jamison, depending on the game’s flow.
“He had multiple jobs, so as a defender himself, he was a great defender,” Arenas explained.
Bryant earned nine NBA All-Defensive First Team selections and three Second Team nods over his 20-year career. His defensive accolades placed him alongside some of the greatest perimeter stoppers in league history.
The five-time champion was known primarily for his scoring, finishing with 33,643 career points to rank fourth on the NBA’s all-time scoring list. Still, players like Arenas continue to stress that his defensive impact often went underappreciated.
Arenas’ comments add to the ongoing debate about Bryant’s defensive legacy, with some former opponents echoing Teague’s skepticism while others point to his consistent All-Defensive recognition.
Bryant’s ability to take on the toughest assignments was key to the Lakers’ championship runs in the early 2000s and again in 2009 and 2010. His combination of scoring prowess and defensive versatility cemented him as one of the most complete players in league history.
