Houston Rockets center Alperen Sengun opened up about the impact of Jalen Green’s trade to the Phoenix Suns on his personal and team experience. Sengun described Green as “like a brother” and highlighted how the two players navigated the NBA together.
The Rockets’ roster has undergone a significant transformation since trading James Harden and Russell Westbrook, with Sengun emerging as a central figure in the team’s new chapter. “We learned everything from them. I was sad when he left,” Sengun said on Socrates Sergi, via HoopsHype, referring to the initial stages of his NBA journey alongside Green.
Green, along with Dillon Brooks, was traded in a seven-team deal that brought Kevin Durant to Houston on July 6. Sengun noted that while Green’s departure was difficult, the addition of Durant represents a fresh opportunity for the team.
Despite the trade, Sengun maintains a close relationship with Green, speaking with him immediately after the news. “I hope this trade motivates you even more,” Sengun said he told Green, emphasizing his belief that the guard will continue to develop into a “really great player.”
Sengun also highlighted Green’s maturity and growth potential, suggesting that the former Rockets guard will overcome personal struggles and elevate his game. “Sometimes he battles with himself, but I think he won’t do that anymore,” Sengun said.
Over four seasons in Houston, Green played 307 regular-season games, averaging 20.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game with a .422 field-goal percentage and .342 three-point percentage. In seven playoff games this past season, he averaged 13.3 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 2.9 assists, though his shooting dipped to .372 from the field.
Sengun emphasized the personal bond he and Green share, noting plans to continue their friendship beyond the NBA. “We’re still talking, and I’ll bring him to Turkey too,” he said, reinforcing the close connection formed during their early years in Houston.
The Rockets now turn their focus to integrating Durant into the lineup while continuing to build around Sengun as the team aims to make a deep playoff push. Houston’s new roster marks a significant shift in identity, but Sengun’s leadership and perspective will play a key role in the team’s next chapter.
