Kyrie Irving has addressed long-standing speculation about his 2017 exit from the Cleveland Cavaliers, making it clear that his decision to leave was not driven by any personal issues with LeBron James.
Speaking during a Twitch stream, Irving explained that his departure was about seeking a new chapter in his career rather than a rift with the four-time NBA champion.
“When you’re playing with someone like [James] … it’s a different animal,” Irving said, as reported by CBS Sports. “It’s a different journey, you’re automatically expected to be at the top of the league.”
The nine-time All-Star acknowledged that playing alongside James came with intense scrutiny and constant storylines that often extended beyond basketball.
“Every time you play with [James] it’s going to be a lot of media attention, a lot of narratives, spun narratives, politics, a lot of s— that people don’t see in front of the camera,” Irving added.
He stressed that his choice to request a trade in 2017 was not rooted in animosity, but in a desire for growth.
“For me I was just a young person trying to figure it out,” Irving said. “It’s not that I disliked playing with [James] at any time, it was just literally my time to move on.”
Irving and James formed one of the NBA’s most potent duos, leading Cleveland to three consecutive NBA Finals appearances and capturing the 2016 championship — the first in franchise history.
Their partnership produced some of the most memorable moments in Cavaliers history, including Irving’s game-winning three-pointer in Game 7 of the 2016 Finals against the Golden State Warriors.
After leaving Cleveland, Irving played for the Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets before joining the Dallas Mavericks, where he remains a central figure in the team’s championship aspirations.
While public perception over the years painted his exit as a fractured relationship with James, Irving’s latest comments appear aimed at reframing that narrative.
