Mahmoud Abdelfattah has been hired as head coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves’ G League affiliate, the Iowa Wolves, league sources told Michael Scotto.

Abdelfattah will also serve as an assistant coach for USA Basketball’s AmeriCup Qualifying Team, adding international duties to his new role.

Abdelfattah’s resume includes head coaching the Rio Grande Valley Vipers (2019–2022), an assistant stint with the Houston Rockets (2022–2023), and a recent season as Sydney Kings head coach.

He rose through U.S. coaching ranks after early stops at Perspectives Charter Schools and St. Cloud, building a reputation for player development and modern, analytics-informed coaching.

The move plugs a proven developmental voice into Minnesota’s pipeline at a time when the franchise is emphasizing depth and continuity.

The Timberwolves’ organization completed an ownership change in June 2025, and adding experienced G League leadership aligns with the new regime’s long-term roster strategy.

Abdelfattah’s work in the G League and in Australia gives him experience coaching young prospects and integrating international styles, key traits for an Iowa Wolves bench boss.

Minnesota’s roster construction and two-way player pathways should benefit from a coach familiar with both NBA staff structures and affiliate-level development.
