According to ESPN’s Anthony Slater, the standoff between Jonathan Kuminga and the Golden State Warriors has shown no real signs of progress in recent weeks. Despite ongoing speculation about the restricted free agent’s future, talks remain at a standstill.
Kuminga recently returned to his offseason base in Miami after making a trip to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, his home country. Upon his return, his position toward the Warriors’ latest contract proposal remained unchanged.
The offer on the table – a two-year, $45 million deal with a team option for the second season – hasn’t impressed him.
Compounding matters, Golden State’s proposal would also require the player to waive his implicit no-trade clause, giving the team full flexibility to move him midseason without his input.
From Kuminga’s perspective, the structure is heavily tilted in the Warriors’ favor. With no guaranteed money beyond the first year, a salary that would be attractive to potential trade partners, and no control over his destination, the deal feels more like a setup for a future trade than a long-term commitment.
Slater reports that the 22-year-old forward has been clear about his priorities: he wants a contract that secures his place as a core building block – whether in Golden State or elsewhere – and a short-term, trade-friendly arrangement doesn’t fit that vision.
Sources told ESPN that Kuminga’s camp countered with a three-year, $82 million proposal, which the Warriors quickly declined. For now, the gap remains wide.
Privately, Kuminga has indicated to those close to him that he’d rather accept his one-year, $8 million qualifying offer and become an unrestricted free agent in 2026 than sign the Warriors’ current “one-plus-one” deal.
