Spanish basketball icon Rudy Fernandez has given high praise to the Boston Celtics’ recent first-round draft pick, Hugo Gonzalez, according to Zack Cox of The Boston Herald.
Fernandez, who has closely observed Gonzalez’s journey from a promising young talent to a dependable player with Real Madrid, expressed strong confidence in the 19-year-old shooting guard’s development and potential impact.
“I always tried to instill in him the idea of committing to improving the team whenever he’s on the floor, and he’s done that perfectly,” Fernandez said.
“He’s got the physical tools, good hands, a strong understanding of the game on both ends, and he’s a solid standstill shooter. Maybe he could improve his movement shooting, especially coming off screens, but he’s the type of player who gets better every day.”
Gonzalez showcased promising potential during his time with Real Madrid. In the 2024–25 season, he participated in 69 games across various competitions, averaging 3.4 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 0.6 assists per game.
His shooting efficiency included a field goal percentage of 40.8%, a three-point percentage of 28.4%, and a free throw percentage of 75.8%.
