The Los Angeles Clippers brought in both Chris Paul and Bradley Beal – two veteran stars who have consistently worn the No. 3 jersey throughout their NBA careers.
However, there won’t be any tension or competition over who claims the number this time, according to Jay Dieffenbach of The Arizona Republic.
As Paul approaches what might be the last chapter of his decorated career, he’ll be able to hold onto both his trademark number and the identity tied to it – his famous “CP3” moniker.
In a conference call with the media, Clippers president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank revealed just how selfless Beal was behind the scenes.
“Once Brad heard it’s a possibility Chris was coming, he said, ‘I want to give him my number,’ and I don’t even think Chris knows this yet,” Frank shared.
“It’s awesome that Brad made such a great gesture like that. … Brad is such a great guy and an awesome teammate. … He knows what that jersey means to Chris. There’s a reason why he’s CP3.”
Paul’s deep-rooted connection to the number goes back to his earlier stint with the Clippers from 2011 to 2017, when he was a perennial All-Star and one of the franchise’s defining players.
While Beal has yet to select a new jersey number, his thoughtful act underscores the mutual respect and team-first mindset he brings into the Clippers locker room.
