The London Lions have appointed Tautvydas Sabonis as their new head coach, marking a major step in the club’s plans to elevate its presence in European basketball.
The move was officially announced on Monday, with the 33-year-old Lithuanian taking the reins after serving as assistant coach at Žalgiris Kaunas.
Sabonis, son of basketball legend Arvydas Sabonis and brother of NBA All-Star Domantas Sabonis, has built his own reputation as a rising star in the coaching ranks.
After retiring from his professional playing career in 2019, he transitioned into coaching with Žalgiris, progressing through their youth and senior staff over the past five years.
During his tenure in Kaunas, Sabonis served as lead assistant to four different EuroLeague head coaches, gaining valuable experience at Europe’s highest level of competition. His work on player development and tactical preparation earned him recognition across the continent.
The London Lions are positioning this hire as a turning point for the club, which recently announced investments in a new stadium and a return to EuroCup competition next season. Sabonis is expected to lead both the British Basketball League campaign and the team’s European ventures.
