Despite growing speculation about LeBron James’ future with the Los Angeles Lakers, it appears the 40-year-old superstar has no plans to leave the team anytime soon.
According to The Athletic’s Dan Woike and Joe Vardon, both the Lakers organization and those close to James fully expect him to be present for training camp ahead of the 2025–26 season.
“No trade or buyout discussions have taken place between LeBron’s camp and the Lakers’ front office,” report Woike and Vardon, reaffirming earlier coverage from ESPN stating that James’ longtime agent, Rich Paul, has not asked the franchise to explore a trade after LeBron exercised his $52.6 million player option for the upcoming season.
League sources also told The Athletic that there has been “no indication from James or his representatives” that he is seeking a move elsewhere. In fact, all signs suggest he’s locked in – at least for now.
While fans and media alike have floated a possible return to Cleveland or surprise moves to big-market contenders like the Knicks, Warriors, or Mavericks, each scenario faces serious roadblocks – both financially and contractually.
A reunion with the Cavaliers, for example, is highly unlikely unless James were to be bought out – something the Lakers, still aiming to contend for a title, have no incentive to do.
Cleveland is also currently over the NBA’s second apron, which restricts them from aggregating salaries to facilitate a trade.
Even if James were bought out, the Cavs would be prohibited from signing him during the regular season due to those same restrictions.
Other rumored suitors like the Warriors or Knicks would need to offer hefty salary-matching deals to make a trade work – potentially involving stars like Jimmy Butler or Karl-Anthony Towns.
But doing so would compromise the Lakers’ long-term goal of maintaining salary cap flexibility next summer.
As for the Mavericks, sources say Dallas has no interest in tearing apart its current roster to make room for James – even with his on-court value still remarkably high.
It’s also worth noting that James holds a full no-trade clause, meaning the Lakers couldn’t move him without his explicit approval – a major lever of control that LeBron continues to hold.
So, while trade chatter continues to swirl around the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, nothing concrete suggests a departure is imminent.
For now, LeBron James remains committed to the purple and gold – and ready to run it back with the Lakers.
