It’s been years since Dwyane Wade’s mother, Jolinda, was incarcerated, but the NBA legend recently told TMZ Sports he still treasures the letters she sent him from prison – and continues to read them today.
Wade reflected on how important it was to keep in touch with his mom during that time, saying the letters helped them stay emotionally connected.
“We weren’t judging her,” he said. “We just loved her and wanted her to come home.”
Though she couldn’t be there physically, her words gave him comfort and strength. He still revisits them as a reminder of their journey.
“No matter where you go in life, you’ve got to look back and appreciate things,” he said.
Jolinda, who overcame addiction, was released in 2003, found sobriety, and later became a pastor.
In 2008, Wade gifted her a church in Chicago. Last week, she surprised him on TODAY with Jenna & Friends, expressing how much his letters meant.
“They got me through each day,” she said, as the two shared a heartfelt hug and emotional moment on air.
