Hornets guard KJ Simpson is fully embracing the opportunity to serve as the lead playmaker for Charlotte’s Summer League squad, a chance he missed last year during his rookie campaign, reports Roderick Boone of the Charlotte Observer.
With the team’s backcourt brimming with talent, Simpson understands that carving out a spot in the rotation will require him to display greater offensive consistency and efficiency.
“I know I’ve grown a lot – I’m shooting the ball much better and scoring in a more controlled, effective way than I did during the season,” Simpson explained. “For me, it’s about making smarter decisions, taking higher-quality shots, and just refining the overall efficiency of my game. There’s always room to sharpen that.”
Simpson also recognizes that his defensive impact will be just as crucial in securing a role. He’s aiming to become a relentless on-ball defender – the type who sets the tone with intensity and energy.
To guide his approach, he’s been studying Indiana Pacers guard T.J. McConnell, especially admiring his habit of applying pressure full court and playing with unwavering determination.
“T.J. is someone I look up to because he competes with so much heart – it’s not about size, it’s about effort,” said Simpson. “I want to bring that same level of grit and prove I can impact the game like he does, regardless of physical measurements.”
Simpson has played 1 season for the Hornets. He has averaged 7.8 points, 3.1 assists and 3.0 rebounds in 36 regular-season games.
