Jeff Weltman, who has held the role of president of basketball operations for the Orlando Magic since 2017, has guided the franchise to the playoffs four times.
Yet despite those postseason appearances, the team has consistently fallen short of advancing past the first round. Now, with a refreshed roster and renewed optimism, Weltman believes the current Magic might be his most promising group yet.
“From my perspective, since I arrived here, this is the roster that I believe has the highest potential,” Weltman shared, according to Jason Beede of The Orlando Sentinel. “I think this team has a real shot at achieving something meaningful – more than any group we’ve assembled during my tenure.”
He emphasized that while the talent is evident on paper, the real work lies ahead.
“It’s up to our players, our coaching staff, and everyone involved to give everything we’ve got to help this team grow and go as far as it can,” he said, underlining the collaborative effort required to turn potential into progress.
Weltman is also encouraged by the age and developmental trajectory of the roster.
“What excites me most is how young this team still is – there’s a ton of upside built into this group,” he added. “We’ve got a lot to look forward to, not just down the road, but starting now.”
This offseason, Orlando made a bold move by trading for two-way wing Desmond Bane and adding veteran point guard Tyus Jones in free agency.
These acquisitions complement the team’s rising stars – Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, and Jalen Suggs – forming what Weltman sees as the most complete and competitive unit he’s had the chance to build.
Banchero also secured his future in Orlando with a new long-term contract extension, solidifying his role as the face of the franchise.
