The New York Knicks currently have one available spot on their roster, which they’re expected to use on an experienced free agent – preferably a backcourt player who can provide additional ball-handling and playmaking, according to Stefan Bondy of The New York Post.

In his analysis of potential candidates who could fill that role, Bondy highlights a few names to watch, noting that the Knicks have shown interest in Marcus Smart.

While the player is still under contract with the Washington Wizards, New York is reportedly monitoring his situation closely, especially in the event that he and the Wizards negotiate a contract buyout, which would make him a free agent and a possible fit for the Knicks’ needs.

Smart has played 11 seasons for the Celtics, Grizzlies and Wizards. He has averaged 10.6 points, 4.6 assists and 3.4 rebounds in 635 regular-season games.

He has won 1 Defensive Player of the Year award.
