Miami Heat rookie guard Kasparas Jakucionis experienced a challenging introduction to Summer League basketball during his debut on Saturday, as reported by Anthony Chiang of The Miami Herald.
The 20th overall pick in this year’s NBA Draft struggled to find his rhythm offensively in the Heat’s California Classic win over the San Antonio Spurs.
Jakucionis shot just 1-of-7 from the field and missed all four of his attempts from beyond the arc. He also turned the ball over three times in 22 minutes of play.
Reflecting on his first appearance, the Lithuanian guard acknowledged the adjustment he’s facing.
“Today was my first game and it was different,” Jakucionis said. “The game style and everything is different. But I’m happy with the team’s performance. I think we played pretty good. We had good effort, we shared the ball well and we played as a team.”
While his box score was modest, recording only one assist, Chiang noted that the player created several quality looks for teammates who couldn’t convert, hinting at his playmaking potential.
Known for his high usage and strong ball-handling during his collegiate career at Illinois, Jakucionis was used in a variety of roles on Saturday, alternating between on-ball and off-ball responsibilities as the Heat experimented with his fit in their system.
Summer League head coach Eric Glass came away encouraged by Jakucionis’ poise and consistency, despite the lack of flashy numbers.
“I think Kas was very steady,” Glass said. “That’s the one thing I’ve noticed about him. Even through the training camp we had, there were never really any high moments, any low moments, he was just super steady, super solid. And I thought that’s what he brought us today.”
Though the stat line may not reflect it, the Heat remain optimistic about Jakucionis’ potential and his ability to adapt as he gains experience at the professional level.
