Miami Heat rookie guard Kasparas Jakucionis made it clear during his introductory press conference that he will not participate in EuroBasket 2025.
The Lithuanian prospect, who was selected by the Heat in the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft, was asked directly about his plans for the tournament. “This year, no,” Jakucionis responded when pressed about potentially joining the national team for the upcoming European competition.
Jakucionis joins Jonas Valanciūnas, Domantas Sabonis, and Matas Buzelis as the fourth active NBA player from Lithuania. Despite the national team connection, the 19-year-old said his immediate focus is on his NBA career.
The former Illinois guard is coming off a productive freshman season, where he averaged 15.0 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game on 44% shooting. Now, as he transitions to the professional level, Jakucionis said he’s focused on developing his body and adjusting to the pace of the league.
“Obviously I need to put the work in the weight room, building my body, building my strength,” he said.
Asked about Heat culture, Jakucionis praised the organization’s identity. “Yeah, so it’s a winning culture. All the time trying to do everything possible to win,” he said. “Try to work hard and be the best version of myself for the team to win.”
Jakucionis also discussed his path from Lithuania to Spain, then to the United States. He emphasized that his experience adapting to different styles of basketball has prepared him for this next step. “Every time I moved to play somewhere else—especially from home when I was just 15—it helped me grow as a person and as a player,” he said.
On the topic of NBA influences, he named Luka Doncic and Andrew Nembhard as players he studies. “I like how Andrew Nembhard gives 100% on both ends on the floor,” he said. “Tries to do the right plays… but I just like to be myself.”
The 6’5″ guard is expected to debut in Summer League next month as he begins his transition to Miami’s rotation. Asked what he’s looking forward to in Las Vegas, Jakucionis said, “Just playing in Summer League, try to get to know the game a little bit, and just dial in with the process.”
Though he won’t be available for EuroBasket, Jakucionis reiterated his commitment to growth and helping the Heat. “Just ready to work hard and be the best version of myself,” he said.
