The Washington Wizards face a crucial draft pick situation involving the New York Knicks, which may heavily influence how the team approaches the 2025/26 season.
According to The Athletic’s Josh Robbins, Washington owes its 2026 first-round pick to the Knicks, but only if that pick falls outside of the top eight.
If the pick lands within the top eight, it will be protected, and the Knicks would instead receive Washington’s second-round picks in both 2026 and 2027.
Given how much value the Wizards place on retaining that 2026 first-rounder, especially after missing out on lottery luck in the 2025 draft, the team is expected to avoid any path that would put that asset at risk.
As Robbins notes, “it’s very difficult” to imagine a scenario where Washington risks conveying that pick to New York.
In effect, this creates a strong incentive for the Wizards to remain in rebuilding mode for at least another season.
To keep the 2026 pick, Washington would likely need to finish as one of the NBA’s worst five teams in 2025/26 – a reality the franchise appears prepared to accept to protect its long-term future and maximize draft capital.
This outlook further reinforces the Wizards’ slow, deliberate rebuild strategy.
Rather than accelerate their timeline at the risk of losing a key asset, the front office seems committed to maintaining a bottom-tier record to secure the best possible position for their young core moving forward.
