As the NBA’s offseason coaching carousel continues to spin, Houston Rockets assistant coach Royal Ivey has emerged as a name attracting attention across the league.
According to Marc Stein, “multiple teams” – most notably the San Antonio Spurs – have expressed interest in Ivey for potential staff openings.
Despite the buzz, however, the former NBA guard is reportedly expected to remain with the Rockets for the upcoming season.
Ivey’s profile has risen considerably in recent years. In addition to his work under Rockets head coach Ime Udoka, Ivey was part of the interview process for the Phoenix Suns’ head coaching vacancy earlier this summer.
He also served as head coach of South Sudan’s national team during the 2024 Olympics, gaining valuable international experience and further demonstrating his leadership ability.
According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, Ivey’s coaching reputation has also caught the attention of the Memphis Grizzlies, who are continuing to explore multiple additions to their bench staff.
In addition to Ivey, another name in the mix for Memphis is Miami Heat assistant Wayne Ellington, a former NBA sharpshooter who has transitioned into coaching and development roles since retiring.
While Ivey appears likely to stay put in Houston, his expanding résumé and growing recognition make him a name to watch in future head coaching searches.
For now, though, it looks like the Rockets will retain one of their most promising assistants – a win for their young, developing core.
