Following the trade that sent Desmond Bane to the Orlando Magic, the Memphis Grizzlies have opened up significant long-term salary cap flexibility and bolstered their draft capital with multiple future picks.
Despite what might look like a rebuilding move, the Grizzlies have no plans to hit the reset button or part ways with their franchise cornerstones – Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr. Both players remain firmly in Memphis’ long-term vision.
After the team’s first-round playoff sweep at the hands of the Oklahoma City Thunder, general manager Zach Kleiman admitted the Grizzlies were “not close” to championship contention.
While that acknowledgment signaled the likelihood of roster changes, it also clarified that the changes would not involve moving their core stars.
On the contrary, the Bane trade has created more financial flexibility, potentially allowing Memphis to open up additional cap space this summer to pursue a renegotiate-and-extend deal with Jackson.
Meanwhile, the franchise is preparing for a new on-court identity under recently promoted head coach Tuomas Iisalo.
The Grizzlies plan to adopt a faster-paced style of play that the front office believes will better showcase the dynamic abilities of both Morant and Jackson.
While Bane was a valuable scorer and playmaker, Memphis reportedly viewed his skillset as less ideal for an up-tempo system, making his departure more about fit than talent.
In short, the Grizzlies’ recent moves are part of a retooling, not a teardown, with a focus on building around their two All-Star talents and creating a system where they can thrive.
