Giannis Antetokounmpo is set to continue his tenure with the Milwaukee Bucks, despite speculation earlier this spring that he might consider a change in scenery.
Back in May, reports suggested for the first time that Antetokounmpo was genuinely open to evaluating his long-term future, raising doubts about whether he would stay in Milwaukee.
Though no official discussions between Antetokounmpo and the Bucks have been publicly confirmed, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst revealed on Thursday that the broader consensus around the NBA is now clear: Antetokounmpo will remain with the franchise.
“There’s not going to be a Giannis Antetokounmpo trade in the short-term future,” Windhorst said on ESPN’s Get Up. “The league has come to terms with the realization that the Bucks are going to keep him and Giannis is not going to ask for a trade. I can’t speak for what might happen in August.”
Milwaukee has continued to operate under the assumption that Antetokounmpo is committed, using that belief to steer their medium-term plans.
The organization is aiming to retool the roster around their franchise cornerstone in hopes of regaining championship form. Antetokounmpo, who will turn 31 in December, remains central to their aspirations.
In previous years, the Bucks have responded proactively to Antetokounmpo’s contract situations with high-impact moves. Before he signed a supermax extension in 2020, they acquired Jrue Holiday.
In 2023, they traded Holiday as part of a bold move to land Damian Lillard. However, similar headline-grabbing transactions this summer appear improbable due to financial limitations and a lack of valuable draft assets.
Although Antetokounmpo is contractually tied to Milwaukee until 2027, he will have the opportunity to ink a four-year, $293 million extension in the summer of 2026. He is represented by agents Alex Saratsis and Jeff Austin.
On the court, Antetokounmpo remains among the NBA’s elite. He finished third in MVP voting this season, averaging 30.4 points, 11.9 rebounds, 6.5 assists, and 1.2 blocks per game.
His Player Efficiency Rating (PER) was 30.1, marking the fourth time in his career he has eclipsed the 30.0 threshold, a testament to his sustained excellence.
