The Utah Jazz are making a significant front-office move by appointing Austin Ainge as their new president of basketball operations.
Ainge arrives in Salt Lake City after spending the past 14 years with the Boston Celtics organization, where he built a reputation as a sharp evaluator of talent and a key figure in the team’s scouting and drafting success.
His father, Danny Ainge, a former NBA executive and player, currently serves as the Jazz’s CEO of basketball operations.
While Justin Zanik has served as the Jazz’s general manager and played a pivotal role in overseeing the franchise’s daily operations, Austin Ainge is now stepping into a top-tier leadership role.
He will assume ultimate authority over all basketball-related decisions, ranging from roster moves to long-term strategic planning.
Team governor Ryan Smith made the leadership hierarchy clear while introducing Ainge to the media, acknowledging that questions about the team’s front-office structure were expected.
He emphasized that while collaboration among executives like Danny Ainge, Zanik, and himself will continue, the final say will rest with Austin.
“Every organization operates a bit differently, and we’ve learned that structure matters,” Smith said. “In our case, Austin is in charge. He’ll be the one making the final recommendations to me, and it’s our job – Danny’s, Justin’s, and mine – to support and work with him.”
Smith reiterated the clarity of the new chain of command with a simple statement: “This is Austin’s show.”
During his tenure with the Celtics, Austin Ainge played a pivotal role in leading both domestic and international scouting operations.
He is widely credited for Boston’s ability to uncover high-value players late in the draft and for helping identify impactful international prospects, a skill set that will be especially relevant for Utah as the team continues to reshape its roster.
Currently holding the fifth overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, the Jazz are at a pivotal point in their rebuilding process.
Since parting ways with former franchise cornerstones Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert in blockbuster trades to the Cavaliers and Timberwolves, respectively, the organization has been focused on developing a new core.
