Sergio Scariolo is on the verge of returning to the NBA, with a formal interview set to take place in the United States, according to Eurohoops.
The current Spanish national team head coach is expected to meet with an undisclosed NBA franchise that has officially requested to speak with him regarding a coaching vacancy.
Scariolo, 64, previously spent three seasons with the Toronto Raptors, where he was part of the staff that won the 2019 NBA Championship.
His tenure in Toronto included serving as interim head coach during a game in February 2021, when head coach Nick Nurse and several assistants were unavailable due to health and safety protocols.
After leaving Toronto, Scariolo took over Virtus Bologna in Italy in 2021 and led the club to a EuroCup title in 2022, which secured their return to the EuroLeague.
His run with Virtus also included back-to-back Supercup titles in 2021 and 2022, although the team failed to make the EuroLeague playoffs and fell short in back-to-back national finals against Olimpia Milan.
In September 2023, Virtus Bologna dismissed Scariolo following comments he made about the team’s roster shortly before the start of the season.
Despite that exit, his coaching résumé remains one of the most decorated in European basketball, with multiple medals from FIBA competitions and a reputation for tactical discipline.
Scariolo’s interview signals growing NBA interest in experienced international coaches as several franchises prepare for offseason changes.
With coaching vacancies emerging around the league, his name joins a shortlist of candidates being considered by teams looking to restructure the 2024-25 season.
