As the NBA offseason approaches, uncertainty continues to surround the future of Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo.
On the morning of the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery, reports surfaced suggesting that the two-time MVP is “open-minded” about his long-term future with the franchise.
In the weeks since, however, there have been no major developments, leaving the Bucks and much of the league waiting to see what direction Antetokounmpo might take.
NBA insider Shams Charania of The Athletic shed light on the situation during a recent segment, stating, “I reported a few weeks ago he is open-minded. He is right now in the process of figuring out: is my forever home going to be in Milwaukee? Or is it time to go pursue a championship somewhere else?”
According to Charania, Antetokounmpo has yet to meet with Bucks leadership for any definitive conversation about his future.
“I’m told that process is ongoing,” he said. “There still has not yet been a big moment of truth meeting, I’m told, between the Bucks and Giannis Antetokounmpo. That will happen at some point in the offseason.”
Despite the uncertainty, Milwaukee’s front office remains hopeful that their longtime franchise cornerstone will remain loyal to the team he’s spent his entire NBA career with.
Charania noted, “The Bucks are operating as if loyalty is going to win out. ‘We’re going to have Giannis.’ He’s been there for 12 years. A player like that – loyalty means a lot. Equity means a lot. And so the Bucks are banking on that. They’re banking on a gap year, essentially, where they’re going to be able to retool around Giannis.”
However, that optimism is tempered by difficult roster circumstances. Milwaukee’s flexibility this offseason is limited, both in terms of salary cap space and trade assets.
Making matters worse, All-Star guard Damian Lillard is expected to miss the entire 2025–26 season as he recovers from a torn Achilles tendon. That reality has intensified questions about whether the Bucks can field a championship-caliber team around Antetokounmpo in the short term.
In previous situations when Antetokounmpo faced extension decisions, namely in 2020 and again in 2023, the Bucks acted decisively. In 2020, they acquired Jrue Holiday in a blockbuster move.
In 2023, they doubled down, flipping Holiday in a deal for Damian Lillard. But replicating a move of that magnitude this offseason appears highly unlikely, leaving Milwaukee with fewer options to reshape the roster in a meaningful way.
Charania concluded his update by reiterating that the decision-making process is still in motion. “Antetokounmpo is still in the process of figuring out what his future looks like,” he said. “I think between now and the start of free agency we’re going to get some more answers.”
As one of the league’s most dominant and influential players, any decision Giannis makes will ripple across the NBA landscape.
For now, both the Bucks and their fans are left waiting, hopeful that familiarity, loyalty, and past success will outweigh the allure of starting anew elsewhere.
