Former Boston Celtics defensive specialist Tony Allen shared his views on Duke standout Cooper Flagg during a recent interview on GrindCityMedia’s YouTube channel. Allen expressed skepticism about Flagg’s potential to become a franchise-altering player at the NBA level.

“I don’t think Cooper Flagg’s going to turn a franchise around like that,” Allen said, according to Larry Brown Sports. He compared Flagg not to current stars but to former NBA role players like Andrei Kirilenko. Allen added, “He’s going to be a one-time All-Star. I don’t see it, bro. I’m just not hyped on these Duke kids.”

Flagg, who enrolled at Duke in June 2024, made a strong freshman debut, breaking scoring records and earning both ACC Player of the Year and ACC Rookie of the Year honors. The 18-year-old guard/forward averaged impressive numbers throughout the season, including a 42-point game against Notre Dame that set new freshman scoring records for Duke and the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Despite his success at the college level, Allen doubts Flagg’s ability to reach superstar status in the NBA. “I ain’t seeing KD,” Allen stated, referencing Kevin Durant’s elite scoring and impact.

The Dallas Mavericks won the 2025 NBA Draft lottery and hold the first overall pick. Flagg is widely expected to be the top selection in June’s draft. The Mavericks see an opportunity to add a young, versatile talent alongside veterans Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis as they look to improve on their 39-43 record this season.

Other projected lottery picks include Dylan Harper, VJ Edgecombe, Ace Bailey, and Derik Queen, who have drawn attention for their own potential at the next level. Flagg’s college achievements have made him a leading candidate, but Allen’s remarks suggest expectations around the Duke star should be tempered.

The 2025 NBA Draft Combine will take place May 11–18, with the first round scheduled for June 25.
