As the Miami Heat enter the offseason looking to reshape their roster, young guard Pelle Larsson is taking the time to reflect and refocus. The 24-year-old Swede knows where he stands and, more importantly, where he wants to go.
After appearing in 55 regular-season games for Miami, Larsson posted modest but promising numbers, shooting 43.8% from the field and 33.7% from three-point range. Though his contributions were limited, Larsson’s approach is rooted in accountability and improvement.
“I think shooting is always something that you get better at all the time,” Larsson told The South Florida Sun Sentinel’s Ira Winderman. “It never hurts to be a better shooter in this league.”
Larsson, who signed a team-friendly deal with the Heat, is scheduled to make $1.96 million next season.
Just $978,000 of that is guaranteed, but his full salary will lock in if he’s on the opening night roster – a scenario that seems increasingly likely given his development track and the Heat’s investment in nurturing young talent.
He’s not taking that security for granted.
“So definitely keep working on that,” Larsson continued, “and then being more comfortable with the ball in my hands, making decisions and making plays for others is something that I think could have been needed more of this year.
“So just making plays for others and keep defending at a higher level. I kind of got introduced to how it was. And I think I’ve learned a lot from this year.”
Larsson’s hunger to grow as a playmaker and defender could give Miami another rotation-ready guard if he continues on this path through training camp and preseason.
