Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla has expressed confidence that Jayson Tatum will improve after a challenging performance in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. Despite Tatum’s 13 points on 5-for-19 shooting, Mazzulla backed his star player, stressing that better performances are expected moving forward.

In a candid response to a reporter’s question, Mazzulla said, “I expect him to be better. There’s no doubt in my mind.” The statement comes after Tatum struggled through a tough shooting night, finishing with just 13 points on 5-for-19 shooting. He also committed three turnovers, including a costly one in the final seconds of the game that sealed the Knicks’ victory.

Despite Tatum’s struggles, Mazzulla emphasized that the entire team needs to step up. “We all can be better. I could be better in the things that I can help our team execute on,” he added. This reflects a collective approach to improving, as Mazzulla noted that the team is focusing not just on Tatum, but on overall execution to turn things around.

In the Celtics’ narrow 91-90 defeat, Tatum was not the only one who faced difficulties. Boston’s offense was uncharacteristically cold in the final quarter, missing 13 consecutive shots. The Celtics were outscored 23-4 in the fourth, with the Knicks, led by Mikal Bridges, capitalizing on the late-game struggles. Mazzulla acknowledged that it’s critical for his team to execute better in such high-pressure moments.

Mazzulla also pointed to the importance of the team’s margins, specifically their defense and situational plays. “We did that. We shot more free throws, got 10 more shots than they did, and shot 10 more layups than they did last game,” Mazzulla said. He stressed the importance of improving in areas like late-game rebounding and preventing transition baskets.

Looking ahead, Mazzulla is determined to stay optimistic, despite the setbacks. “We have an opportunity to fix that,” he said, referring to the team’s current 0-2 deficit. “We have to win. We have to do what it takes to win.” Game 3 will be a crucial opportunity for the Celtics to reclaim momentum as the series shifts to Madison Square Garden on Saturday.
