The future of Giannis Antetokounmpo in Milwaukee remains one of the biggest questions looming over the NBA, with teams around the league closely monitoring the situation.
Many front offices reportedly view a separation between the Bucks and their franchise star as inevitable, though that split likely won’t happen unless Giannis himself forces the issue.
“I don’t think Giannis himself does not want to go to the Bucks and say ‘Trade me’,” said NBA insider Marc Stein. “But next year there’s no way – with Damian Lillard carrying a salary of nearly 60 million, they don’t have control of their own first-round pick till 2031, they don’t have a pathway to build a contender around him at this point.”
Financially, Giannis is too valuable for the Bucks to move lightly. His presence not only anchors their competitiveness on the court, but he also drives enormous off-court value in brand recognition and revenue.
Unless Antetokounmpo’s camp explicitly asks for a trade, Milwaukee appears reluctant to entertain the possibility.
“But the rumbles that you always hear are that just having Giannis is so important to them financially. They’re not going to trade him unless he pushes it,” Stein added.
This creates a complex standoff, with the Bucks reportedly unwilling to initiate a trade and Giannis hesitant to demand one.
Yet, with the team’s lack of future draft control and limited cap flexibility, the franchise may face increasing pressure to explore a rebuild if competitiveness slips.
“The whole league is on edge waiting to see: will Giannis’ representatives go to the Bucks and say, ‘It’s time. Move us, hold the auction, and start over.’ I don’t think the Bucks want to do that,” said Stein. “You could make the case that they should want to do that, that they should say, ‘Let’s go out and get the largest haul we can get back for Giannis’, but I don’t think the Bucks are there. We’re going to see where Giannis is.”
In short, while many see a split as a matter of time, nothing significant is expected unless Giannis initiates it himself.
